Description |
Hihi! The description is mostly in the fanfic, but I'll try to summerize:
What would Lina and co do in the land of the best wine after they wiped out Rezo? (After first and before Next season)
Humor (of course), a few tears of joy and sorrow, but not too much action.
Oh, btw! I'm Hungarian, and I might have commited a typo or two. Excuse me those, and enjoy the fanfic! |

Slayers - Tipsy?
This fanfic is dedicated to all Slayers fans, like myself. I hope You'll enjoy reading these lines as much as I enjoyed writing them. As you're all aware, I don't own any of these characters or Slayers.
No combat or intense action, I wanted some comedy, a bit of philosophy and teardrops... (not much of the latter) The story takes place right after the first season and before NEXT.
Written by: Uncle Ed (my nick on DC++, since I only shared it there and our club)
I have been writing another fanfic for some time now though I've recently been a bit sluggish 'bout it... we'll see...
Oh, and please be a pal and don't forge my fanfic... But, on the other hand, if you like it, please do spread it among other Slayers fans!
Almost forgot! "Artefact" is not a grammar slip-up of mine, simply the British dictionary form. All RPG fans forgive me, I understand thine wrath, but I was so irritated after the computer crossed it out every time... Correct it, if you must, but spread the original! Thanks again, have a good time, and drop me a line on DC++ when you're finished, and tell me what you think about it!
A.: -How far is the next town?! I don't feel my legs!
Zel.: -Not much farther, Amelia.
A.: -I hope so, Mr Zelgadis.
G.: -So do I, I haven't had a bite of food for over a day!
L.: -Will you just stop complaining?! You ate everything at the last inn all by yourself! I had to look for another inn!
G.: -It's still no reason for kicking me in the shin so hard! I was terribly hungry, that's all!
L.: -Well you deserved it, buster!
G.: -I'll bet you cleaned house yourself!
Zel.: -Like a married couple. Always quarrelling.
G.: -Hey, I haven't said anything bad to you, Zel.
Zel.: -Guess you haven't. Sorry Gourry.
L.: -Oh, are you gonna get it, Zelgadis!
Syl.: -Quite moody today, isn't she, Gourry dear? - asked Sylphiel, hanging on to Gourry's arm.
G.: -What do you mean, today? Let me tell you Sylphiel, she's been like this ever since we've met.
L.: -Which is the next town anyway, Zel?
Zel.: -Can't recall its name. But it's a small town.
A.: -Here's a sign. Oh, I know this place. Rege. The name might be weird, but the best wine is made here. Dad always used to order wine from here. The palace is, uh, I mean... was always full of it, and the guests adore it.
G.: -Look at all those vineyards!
L.: -I never knew you were so fond of wine or grape.
G.: -You've never asked. And I am not. I don't like drinking, a good swordsman fights with a clear head, but I wouldn't miss a chance like this for the world!
The view does cheer up our heroes. Yet it doesn't take half an hour to catch up on a well-known topic.
L.: -Oh Gourry, when are you giving me your sword again? - asked Lina in a softer voice.
G.: -Never. You should really snap out of it Lina, it's getting boring.
L.: -BUT I WAN'T IT !!!! You promised to give it to me!
G.: -Nope. I never did. And I don't think you would be a worthy owner of such artefact! You only want it to beef up your spells.
L.: -I'D HAVE MUCH GREATER USE FOR IT THAN YOU, YOU BIG OAF !!!!
Zel.: -Here we go again! Poor guy.
L.: -SHUT UP ZELGADIS !!!! WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON ANYWAY?!
Zel.: -Neither. I'm just getting bored of this myself.
G.: -You can hardly lift it with a metal blade!
A.: -Ah, good Sir Gourry, you should really...
G.: -Your little-girl birch-rod arms might be able to handle that small rapier of yours, but you would only wave this sword around like a feather duster!
L.: -THAT'S IT !!!!
Zel.: -Now you've done it!
G.: -Oops.
Lina runs up to Gourry and kicks him in his "weak-spot" with all her strength, screaming with anger. Gourry collapses with a big thump, rolling on the ground. Everybody stops stunned for a brief second. Lina walks away in a proud posture, laughing.
A.: -Yikes!
Zel.: -Looks like the Knight of Light can't take a boot in the balls.
G.: -Easy for you to say, Zelgadis! Very funny! Oh my God, it hurts! Getting kicked in the shin was like a tender kiss compared to this. I'm gonna go nuts. Ohhhh!
Zel.: -You vexed her! Don't be surprised.
G.: -Thanks for your sympathy, Zel.
Sylphiel goes to Gourry, helps him up, giggling to herself.
Syl.: -Oh, come on, you big hunk of a man! It can't hurt that much! Not you, Gourry dear.
G.: -You have no idea. I had no idea she was this quick, she attacked me in the blink of an eye.
The gang proceeds to the village. Getting darker and darker. Lina and Zelgadis in the front, Amelia a short way after them, Gourry and Sylphiel way in the back (No wonder.). Zelgadis goes up to Lina:
Zel.: -You shouldn't have been so hard on him.
L.: -He asked for it. He knows that I hate it when he makes cracks about my appearance.
Zel.: -Does he?
L.: -Ahhh... He sure will from now on. I just don't know how to get that sword of his.
Zel.: -I couldn't care less, but let's face it Lina, Gourry might be thick, but no sane man would give away the most powerful broadsword in the world. Get over it.
L.: -You might be right. But hey! That gives me an idea! /As Zel said: no sane man would give me that sword. But what a coincidence! The best winemakers are here, and Gourry said he couldn't take alcohol. If I can drink him under the table, I might be able to convince him! I cannot fail! /
Zel.: -I don't like the way you're looking.
L.: -Ehh... Who? What? Why? Where?
Zel.: -That idea of yours. What is it?
L.: -Oh, nothing too bright, let's forget about it, shall we?
Zel.: -/I don't like this one bit. /
The party arrives at the inn. It's full of cutthroats, robbers, thieves, rogues, slackers, loan sharks, lawyers, corrupt priests, rascals, head-hunters, and: ZANGULUS. Strange, however, that everything's peaceful and quiet. Better safe than sorry, Gourry begins to draw his sword.
G.: -Zangulus?!
From thin air, the bartender shows up, screaming with excitement in a strange accent:
B.: -No, no! No fighting in here! I take all weapons in back room! Handle your problems outside town, I lead proper business here! No trouble here, upstairs, not even outside, or you get no service. Got that?
L.: -What do you mean no fighting? What about all these crooks?
Z.: -This town is all-neutral. Anyone who causes too much mayhem doesn't get any food, accommodation, and worst of all, no wine. However, as long as you follow the rules, you're welcome here.
L.: -How do you know?
B.: -Oh, Mr Zangulus is a patron of my establishment, a regular customer. A habitu‚ if I may. And a model mercenary as well, nonetheless. He also helps out with some of the guests around who...
Z.: -That's enough, Boruro; I think they get the picture.
B.: -I hope so. And you: give me your weapons!
Giving their weapons to a stranger makes the gang annoyed, but not particularly angry. Gourry comes last. He waits until the others are through.
G.: -Do I have to?
B.: -Rules are rules.
G.: -Hum...
Gourry draws his sword and ejects the metal blade on the ground.
B.: - Ha ha! Funny sword you've got there! Good enough for me. Oh, another thing: NO MAGIC! If I lay eyes even on a tiny flare arrow, I'll have you all thrown out! You may claim your belongings when you leave.
They sit down at a table. Lina notices that Gourry still has his sword.
L.: -How come you still have the...
Gourry draws the bladeless hilt, Lina of course gets furious.
G.: -The owner said it's okay like that. Anyway, it would be much too great a risk to leave it in the back room and let you steal it.
Guests: -Huh?
L.: -How do you mean? I...
G.: -Well, you've tried it quite a few times. I can't recall how many times you've tried to steal it, actually!
All eyes focus on Lina, even those of the crooks in the bar.
A.: -But Miss Lina! How could you!
Syl.: -Steal my dear Gourry's sword?!
Zel.: -I would have thought many things, but this is insane!
C1.: -Steal a man's sword!? How despicable!
C2.: -Ain't it a shame, Zangulus?
Z.: -Absolutely. It's the worst thing that can happen to a man. Lose his sword.
C3.: -A little girl stealing swords. What has become of this world?
C4.: -A kleptomaniac sword collector? How appalling!
C5.: -Shame on you, little girl! Trying to steal a man's sword! What a shame!
C6.: -Who says we throw out the little git?!
Every single criminal in the bar holds his hand up.
B.: -Well, that settles it. Tough luck, little girl. Out you go!
G.: -Wait, wait! It's okay, I'm not angry with her. She can't help it that's all. She's obsessed about this sword. I can't let you throw a poor, hungry, defenceless girl on the streets! Have you people no heart? Please, good sir Boruro, do let her stay. I beg of thee!
B.: -Oh, all right. But only because you asked.
Lina can't say a word. Should she be angry, or thankful? Gourry insulted her there a bit, but he also saved her from being thrown out. She can't believe it. He helped her out after all she's done to him.
C1.: -What a gent!
C2.: -Nice job, buddy!
C3.: -You awright, mate?
C4.: -How cute...
C5.: -Come on, sit here with us!
C6.: -We'll all treat you a glass!
C7.: -Hooray for Gourry, noble paladin of the Light!
C1-7.: -HIP-HIP, HOORAY!!! HIP-HIP, HOORAY!!!
Z.: -Bravo, my friend! Bravo!
Gourry is mesmerized. Even these ferocious bandits appreciate his efforts more than Lina! They love him! Clapping, shouting, celebrating him!
G.: -I like it here.
Z.: -The first round is on me!
Syl.: -My Gourry!
The others remain at their table, except Lina, who sits at the bar counter.
B.: -What can I get you, little girl?
Z.: -I think she'd rather if you called her Lina. Right?
L.: -Oh... Yeah...Right.
B.: -Whatever you say, Zangulus. What can I get you, Lina?
L.: -I'll try that famous wine of yours.
B.: -Oh, no you don't. I don't give children any wine.
Z.: -She's older than she looks. She's indeed a really powerful witch. I'll treat you for one if you don't mind. First round includes you as well.
B.: -Coming right up.
Boruro goes inside the back room.
L.: -Thanks.
Z.: -Don't mention it.
L.: -No, really. You helped me out. Why?
Z.: -My contract is no longer effective. You killed the boss for good: no cash, no assignment. And why stay enemies?
L.: -Good point.
Z.: -Don't worry about these guys. They'll be drunk as an owl in an hour or two.
B.: -Here's your wine, Miss.
L.: -Thanks.
Lina drinks the wine, amazed from the magnificent taste.
L.: -How come everything is so peaceful? I mean...
Z.: -It's the wine.
L.: -What?
Z.: -It's magic, don't you feel it?
L.: -Not particularly. I don't usually drink wine.
Z.: -It comforts everyone. Even the worst enemies are friends here.
L.: -Is it because of the wine that we... - Lina points at Zangulus and herself
Z.: -I don't think we had enough that it would have any effect. Look at those guys.
Zangulus points at two brutal-looking bandits. One is missing an eye, the other has a long scar on his face.
Z.: -They are the leaders of the two most vicious smuggler gangs. Normally, they would fight until one kicks the bucket. Here, they're telling stories, jokes, singing together...
Just then, Lina hears the drunken singing coming from Gourry's table: "For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow..."
L.: -I think I get the picture.
Z.: -I knew you would.
Lina calls the owner and hands him a pouch of gold, saying to serve the big blond guy with as much wine as the gold covers. He agrees with a smirk.
L.: -Zangulus, what did you do with the Howling sword?
Z.: -You know it perfectly that it broke.
L.: -Do you have the pieces?
Z.: -I do, but it's hopeless. It broke into tiny bits. Why?
L.: -A sorcerer skilled in metalwork could fashion another magic sword from the remains. It doesn't necessarily lose its powers because it broke.
Z.: -Are you sure?
L.: -Positive! However, the new weapon might possess utterly different powers from the original. You'd have to learn how to use those.
Z.: -Still better than a regular sword.
L.: -Boruro, is there a mage guild nearby?
B.: -Yes. They are skilled in weather and soil enchantments. Why?
L.: -I was wondering if there was a mage smith.
B.: -Well, there is an old lunatic who claims that he can create powerful weapons. He rarely comes here. He does like my wine, but he's too busy to mingle with us, he says.
L.: -I'd search for this old man if I were you, Zan.
Z.: -Will do.
Zangulus gets up and goes for the door. But turns back.
Z.: -Thanks.
L.: -Don't mention it.
Zangulus gives his hand. Lina doesn't get it first, but brightens up. They shake hands. Lina shows him a "V" sign and winks at him. Zangulus leaves. Amelia and Sylphiel appear, a bit red in the nose.
A.: -I'm not sure, but I think I saw a tear in his eye on his way out.
L.: -Amelia? You were watching all along? You little...
A.: -I wasn't, Miss Lina, promise!
Syl.: -You wouldn't even notice.
L.: -WHAT DO YOU MEAN: "YOU WOULDN'T EVEN NOTICE"?
A.: -You're all blushed, Miss Lina.
L.: -AM NOT!
Syl.: -Is it the wine, or is it something else?
L.: -I...I don't know what you're talking about.
A+Syl.: -(Giggling) Does it begin with Z?
L.: -GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!
Sylphiel and Amelia leave, giggling to themselves.
L.: -What got into those two?
Zel.: -They had some wine as well. A tad too much. More than you, actually.
L.: -That explains it.
Zel.: -The wine is enchanted. It brings out the joy, but almost no aggression.
L.: -Yeah, Zan told me.
Zel.: -Zan?
L.: -Uh...I...I mean Zangulus.
Zelgadis lifts an eyebrow with a smirk. Lina checks out Gourry's little "club", and notices that most of the criminals have already left. Gourry looks comparatively well, but there are still a few bandits around. Lina takes the plunge: now's the time!
L.: -Hey, Gourry! How's it going?
G.: -Hi, L...Li...Lina! Everything's s...s...swell. Eh, fellas?
C1-7.:-Ssssssssure!
L.: -Oh Gourry!
G.: -Yup?
L.: -Will you please give me your sword?
G.: -I...I...I...don't know...
L.: -You were going to give me your sword when we arrived. Remember?
G.: -I...I...
L.: -Well?
G.: -De...(Hicc!) Definitely not!
Gourry grabs hold of Lina, lifts her from the ground and puts her on his lap, rubbing her head with one hand, holding her with the other. She's so surprised she can't even hit him! His mouth stinks from the drink.
G.: -I might be a little drunk, well, maybe not so little, but I'm not a dope. Don't go, I'm not finished! Stop taking me for a fool, you little thing you!
L.: -Let me go or I'll...
G.: -Oh come on, stay on uncle Gourry's lap for a while!
Lina suddenly breaks free and tries to punch Gourry in the face, but to her surprise, he blocks and grabs her hand.
G.: -Not this time, buttercup!
L.: -BUTTERCUP?!
Lina's trying to kick, slap or bite him, but he holds her away from himself.
G.: -Oh no you won't!
L.: -LET ME GO YOU RAT!
Gourry grabs her by her cloak and hangs her on a nail sticking out of the wall. He smacks his lips towards her and sits back at the table. She starts to wriggle like a worm on a hook. She can't get off!
L.: -OH, JUST WAIT TILL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU! GET ME DOWN YOU HEEL! YOU WON'T GET AWAY WITH THIS! DO YOU HEAR ME YOU BIG THUG?! YOU'RE GONNA PAY FOR THIS, YOU HEAR!
Zelgadis shows up and helps her off. Not because she isn't OK up there, only because she's just too loud for his liking.
L.: -Thanks, Zel. NOW LISTEN YOU...
Zelgadis grabs Lina and puts his hand on her mouth.
Zel.: -If you won't stop shrieking, I'll put you back on the nail! Got it?
L.: -Uhum. Juff pumme down.
G.: -Hey Zelgadis, come over here! I've got a story you'd die to hear (Hicc).
Zel.: -You're drunk.
G.: -Maybe, but that (Hicc) doesn't matter.
Zelgadis sits next to Gourry. Gourry whispers to him for a minute or two, the other guests are keen on hearing it themselves. Lina tries to overhear a few bits, but she can't make out a thing (Surprising, huh?). Zelgadis stands up, and goes to a clear spot, few steps away from the table. She looks at Lina, puts his fist on his mouth, and begins to laugh up his sleeve with closed eyes.
L.: -What?
Zelgadis emits a snoring sound.
L.: -What?!
Zelgadis begins to weep.
L.: -WHAT?!
He can't hold it back any longer. He bursts out in a terrible laughter, which fills every corner of the room.
L.: -WHAT IS IT?! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Zel.: -Gourry, t...told me...PWHAHAHAHAHA...when you...
Zelgadis falls on the ground from laughing. He can't say a word. He can't even get up!
L.: -WHAT DID YOU TELL HIM?!
G.: -I onnnnly t...t...told himm why you couldnnn't cast a single spell when we werere attacked...b...back in that bar! Remember? Whenn you were having your...p...p...p...
L.: -Gourry, you didn't, did you?
Zel.: -HAHAHAHAHA, THAT WAS A GOOD ONE! HOW RIDICULOUS! LINA INVERSE, THE DRAGON SPOOKER WHO CAN'T EVEN CAST A FIREBALL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE! THAT'S RICH!
L.: -Guess you did...
Lina is awestruck. Betrayed. A figure of fun. No shouts. No slaps. No words. She runs out, crying, pushing over Sylphiel and Amelia (who were just arriving back) on her way out.
A.: -Miss Lina? What happened?
B.: -She ran off. I think it has something to do with those gentlemen.
They notice Zelgadis still on the ground, cackling to himself. He finally gets up, with tears in the eyes.
Syl.: -Zelgadis, I can hardly see you smile, let alone laugh.
Zelgadis looks around. The pub is all quiet again, only Gourry is awake at the table. He doesn't see Lina, though.
Zel.: -WHERE'S LINA?
Syl.: -She ran off, crying. Poor girl. She looked awful.
Zel.: -What have I done!
Zelgadis runs out, Sylphiel shouting after him.
Syl.: -What happened?
Zel.: -I'll explain later!
Zelgadis tries to find Lina's tracks. He can hear high-pitched wailing coming from the nearby forest. He enters the woods, following the sound of weeps. He catches sight of Lina running and tripping on a clearing. He approaches, trying not to lose sight of her. She doesn't get up. She's crying, and in what a terrible way.
Zel.: -Lina?
L.: -DON'T YOU DARE COME ANY NEARER OR I'LL...I'LL...(sob)
Zel.: -Take it easy; it's me, Zelgadis.
L.: -I know it is you! GO AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE!
She still doesn't get up. She's just creeping on the ground, weeping.
Zel.: -Lina. I'm sorry, I...
L.: -You should have been sorry back there. Too late, bulb.
Zel.: -Lina, I...
L.: -I DON'T CARE YOU SENSELESS FREAK!
They both become silent as a tomb. Zelgadis falls on his knees. He begins sobbing himself.
Zel.: -You've called me many things, but for the first time, you said the truth, no matter how much it hurts.
L.: -Zelgadis, I...
Zel.: -No. You're right. I should be the last to laugh at you. I should know how it feels to be lonely and misunderstood. I SHOULD KNOW IT BEST OF ALL...
Lina creeps to Zelgadis, eyes still watery. Zelgadis begins to cry.
L.: -Zel...
Zel.: -I DON'T KNOW WHAT OVERCAME ME! I know how it feels, to be excluded from others, and I don't find it amusing.
L.: -It's okay, Zelgadis. Everything's going to be fine.
Zel.: -(Sobbing.) It's not that easy. I realized when I was laughing at you, I was really laughing at my own futile, ridiculous self. You don't know the true nature of my curse, do you?
L.: -I know you're part golem, part demon and part human. A chimera. You're almost completely immune to physical harm and you have been granted great magical abilities, but you've also retained your humanity and still have your memories. Rezo did this to you. We all know.
Zel.: -There is something else. It all began after we've killed Rezo for the second time.
L.: -What happened, Zel?
Zel.: -I began to change.
L.: -How?
Zel.: -My humanity is abandoning me.
L.: -That can't be...
Zel.: -As I lose my humanity, I shall possess greater powers, but also lose my common human sense. I shall become awkward, paranoid, and even more ashamed of my existence; then, I shall completely lose every part of the individual self I used to be. I shall become a powerful, yet mindless and evil being bent on revenge, but not knowing the cause. A wandering beast of the land, causing mayhem, destroying everything in its path with no mercy or remorse, looking for answers I have long forgotten the questions for. Looking for a path out from that dark, dreaded maze of despair, although I took the wrong turn at the first fork in the road. My soul could never be redeemed then. That's why I'm so determined to find the cure for my curse. If I can't, even a slow, tortured and painful death would be a blessed release from the dreadful future, the eternal damnation I would have to face.
A moment of silence. Lina puts her hand on his.
L.: -You will find it, Zel. I know.
Zel.: -I'm finding it more and more uncertain by every passing day.
L.: -There's always hope.
Zel.: -You sound just like Sylphiel and Amelia, you know.
L.: -Am not! Be more optimistic!
They stand up from the ground, both of them weary.
L.: -Let's head back.
Zel.: -Right.
L.: -You still haven't told me if you have forgiven me.
Zel.: -I was the one who made a mistake in the first place. I have to apologise, not you.
L.: -But only if you forgive me.
Zel.: -Okay.
Lina strokes his hair a bit. It feels cold and hard to the touch. They enter the inn. Only their party remained. Everyone else has left.
Syl.: -Where have you been, Miss Lina?
Zel.: -We had something to discuss.
L.: -Nothing serious.
Zel.: -Well, as a matter of fact...
Lina steps on Zelgadis' foot so that he wouldn't say a thing.
Syl.: -What, Zelgadis?
Zel.: -Uh...Yeah...just like Lina said. Nothing serious.
Syl.: -Oh, okay then. / Yeah right! / - she rolls her eyes around.
L.: -How's Gourry?
B.: -He'll be fine. His head will clear out in an hour or so, although he might still be a little high.
L.: -WHAT? GOURRY!
G.: -Oh, hi! (Hicc)
L.: -YOU SAID YOU COULDN'T TAKE ALCOHOL!
G.: -I said I don't like drinking. I can take loads!
L.: -Oh, no!
Zel.: -He can't remember a thing.
L.: -So it seems. /I need to get that sword! /
Lina goes to Boruro.
L.: -How much did he drink?
B.: -Loads. I haven't seen anyone drink so much before! It is inhuman!
L.: -It's still not enough. Give him your strongest wine! Here's another purse of gold coins.
B.: -It's not the money! That thing is dangerous!
L.: -Gourry can handle it.
B.: -Positively not, young lady. That brew is just too heady even for him.
L.: -Bring him a barrel. NOW!
B.: -Okay, okay. But don't say I didn't warn you.
Boruro comes back with a barrel.
B.: -Here you go. How much do you need?
L.: -All of it!
He brings the barrel to Gourry, and pours a little in his goblet. Gourry drinks it. A drop splashes on the table. Amelia notices it making a strange burn mark.
A.: -Ah... Mr Zelgadis! Look!
Zel.: -What the...
He pours himself a bit of wine, and tastes it. He hardly has a sip and shrieks with pain.
Zel.: -IT BURNS! LIKE FIRE! IT'S KILLING ME! AHHHHH!!!!
L.: -ZELGADIS!
Zel.: -GOURRY! DON'T! ARGHHH!!!!
Gourry lifts the barrel and drinks. Amelia faints.
Syl.: -Amelia! Oh, no! We can't let him drink all that, Miss Lina! He'll die!
Zel.: -LISTEN TO HER...LINA! THIS IS...POISON! ARGHHH!!!!
L.: -Boruro! Help!
B.: -I'm coming, I'm coming! We must take it away from him!
They try to pull the barrel out of his hands, but he won't let go! He's too strong for the three of them. Zelgadis gets on his feet and joins them. Gourry finally lets go. He drank it all!
G.: -That was s...s...swell!
B.: -He's alive!
G.: -I think I'll have some sleep n...now. You'll find me ups...stairs.
Zel.: -I don't believe it!
Syl.: -Are you all right, Gourry dear?
G.: -I've ne...(hicc)...ver felt b...better. Oooh...
He goes up the stairs, but suddenly collapses and rolls down, shaking.
Syl.: -GOURRY! NO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM!
A.: -What... happened? OH MY GOODNESS!
Amelia faints again.
Zel.: -Lets take him upstairs.
Syl.: -Don't drop him, please!
They carry him up the stairs, inside a room and into bed. He's still shaking, moaning in his pain.
L.: -He only needs some rest. A hangover isn't that dangerous, is it?
Syl.: -I'll look after him. In case he needs something.
Zel.: -I'll try to help as much as I can.
L.: -Hey, I want to help too!
Syl.: -Don't you think you've helped enough for one day, Miss Lina?
L.: -I...I...
Zel.: -Why don't you go and take care of Amelia, instead?
L.: -All right. I'll see how she is.
Lina leaves the room. Sylphiel and Zelgadis take off Gourry's armour.
Zel.: -/He looks strange. I think this is more serious than we might think. /
Syl.: -Thank you for staying, Zelgadis. I'd really have you around rather than Miss Lina. Do you think he'll be all right? - she looks at him with eyes full of tears.
Zel.: -I...
Zelgadis looks deep into her eyes. Should he tell her that he fears for the worst? All her hope would die away. What should he say?
Zel.: -I have no doubts about it.
Syl.: -(Sob) thank you, Zelgadis. You're a true friend of Gourry. What does Lina want from him, anyway? My poor Gourry!
Zel.: -That's it! - an expression of clarity crosses his face.
He runs out, closes the door, and begins banging on the door to Lina's room.
Zel.: -LINA! OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW!
L.: -What is it, Zelgadis?!
Zel.: -WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!
She pushes her inside and shuts the door.
Zel.: -NOW I KNOW ABOUT YOUR SICK PLAN!
L.: -What are you talking about?!
Zel.: -YOUR PLAN TO STEAL GOURRY'S SWORD, THAT PLAN!
He corners Lina in the room, putting his hands around her neck, lifting her from the ground; she's trembling with fear, she can hardly breathe...
Zel.: -DO YOU REALIZE THAT GOURRY MIGHT NOT SURVIVE THE NIGHT? WOULD IT BE WORTH IT FOR THAT SWORD? WILL YOU BE HAPPY THEN...
L.: -Zelgadis!
Zel.: -DON'T YOU DARE INTERRUPT ME! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT SYLPHIEL MIGHT DIE OF SORROW FOR HIM?! YOU'VE LOST ALL YOUR RESPECT IN MY EYES!
L.: -Your eyes...
Zel.: -What...
A.: -Miss Lina, what's happening?! I've been sleeping! MR ZELGADIS! WHAT...
She looks at his face, turns pale and runs out, screaming. He looks at his reflection in the mirror: his eyes are burning red, as though they were flaming, shining in a deep red colour, as though they were the eyes of the devil itself. The glass breaks as he gasps. He drops Lina and steps back...
Zel.: -No! This can't be! Not so soon! I need more time! I...I...
L.: -Zelgadis...
Zel.: -I'm a monster...
He runs out to the corridor and enters his own room. Sylphiel is approaching with Amelia.
Syl.: -I've heard the struggling and the shouts. Amelia told me what happened. Are you OK, Miss Lina?
L.: -I am. It's not his fault...
Syl.: -What do you mean, Lina?
L.: -Take a look at him.
Sylphiel knocks on his door.
Syl.: -Zelgadis, it's me. May I come in?
Zel.: -Don't come in, I beg you! You don't want to see me like this.
Syl.: -I want to help.
Zel.: -NO ONE CAN HELP ME.
Syl.: -I'm coming in...
Zel.: -Please, don't...
Sylphiel gasps at the sight. Zelgadis' eyes are shining with that dark, reddish light, dropping tears of blood. He's sitting on his bed, trying to cover his face. His hands and face are soaked with blood.
Syl.: -Zelgadis, I can help you, but you will have to trust me...
Zel.: -It's not that I don't trust you. You wouldn't mean harm to anyone.
Syl.: -Zelgadis, I can quell the beast within. But I will need your help.
Zel.: -I'll try...
She touches his forehead and begins praying an ancient chant. She sucks away the evil in his soul. Zelgadis gets calmer. His eyes are still red with blood, but they're no longer shining. Sylphiel's eyes have turned deep red, though.
Zel.: -Sylphiel, how... how will you...
Syl.: -I have been taught how to overcome evil thoughts and feelings through meditation. I can handle it easily. I can even teach you, if you like.
Zel.: -Thank you. How on earth can I ever repay you?
Syl.: -You've already done quite enough for us. I shall return to Gourry now.
Zel.: -Look after him. Your presence itself will do well for him.
Sylphiel goes back to Gourry. Amelia and Lina enter Zelgadis' room. He's still on his bed, staring at the floor.
A.: -Zelgadis?
L.: -Are you OK, Zel?
Zel.: -I'm losing it, Lina.
A.: -What do you mean, Zelgadis?
Zel.: -It's a long story, Amelia. Will you please explain it to her, Lina? I cannot bear talk about it now.
L.: -Sure.
A.: -And, Mr Zelgadis...
Zel.: -Yes, Amelia?
A.: -Sorry about screaming at you. I was just...
Zel.: -I understand.
They leave his room.
Zel.: -I frighten even myself.
Amelia and Lina go back to Lina's room.
A.: -What was Mr Zelgadis talking about, Miss Lina?
L.: -Amelia, we should sit down.
A.: -Why?
L.: -In case you black out again.
A.: -Very funny, Miss Lina!
L.: -Not at all. You know about the curse Rezo has put on him, don't you?
A.: -I do.
L.: -He has begun to lose his human third.
A.: -What?!
L.: -Even I have no idea how this can happen. But you saw his face, his eyes. The demon took over him. It was not Zelgadis you saw; it was... something else.
A.: -I think I'm going to faint.
L.: -I suspect that once we killed Rezo once again, the curse he had put on him couldn't maintain its original nature, thus it destroys Zelgadis' human self.
A.: -Poor Zelgadis. I hope I didn't hurt his feelings too much.
L.: -From now on, he will probably become more easily agitated and irritated. Sylphiel says she can teach him how to control his emotions, but this is only a temporary solution to his problem. He will simply have a little bit more time to find the cure for his curse.
A.: -Is there no way you can help him in any other way?
L.: -No. But maybe...
A.: -What, Miss Lina?
L.: -You seem to be able to cheer him up sometimes. Perhaps if you stay close to him and talk to him, it might ease his pain.
A.: -Do you think so?
L.: -It's worth a try.
A.: -With pleasure!
Syl.: -AMELIA! ZELGADIS! MISS LINA! COME QUICK!
Zel.: -What the...
The three of them run inside Gourry's room, and notice that he's shaking and sweating.
Syl.: -His eyes are still! He's sweating; he must have a fever!
G.: -Lina! Sylphiel! Zelgadis! Amelia! Where are you? Don't le...leave me!
Zel.: -He's in shock! He's hallucinating!
Syl.: -I'm here, Gourry dear! Can you hear me? Gourry?
G.: -Sylphiel? Lina? Where are you going? What did I do wrong? ZELGADIS!
Zel.: -GOURRY! SNAP OUT OF IT!
G.: -Don't leave me here! Amelia? LINA? Anyone?
A.: -Mr Gourry! We're here!
G.: -Amelia? I can he...hear you but I don't see you! It's so dark!
L.: -We're here, Gourry! - she grabs his hand, dropping tears - We'd never leave you!
A.: -Can you help him, Miss Lina?
Syl.: -I've tried healing, but it has no effect!
Z.: -Wine cannot be cured. It has to be cleansed. - Zangulus shows up, swinging the door open.
L.: -Zangulus? How...
Z.: -Boruro told me that Gourry had just too much. Which wines did he have?
L.: -THE wine.
Z.: -You don't mean...
Syl.: -She told Boruro to give him a full barrel.
Z.: -Didn't he tell you it is dangerous?
L.: -Well...
Z.: -But you have given it to him anyway. Do you have an idea who order that stuff? Pharmacists and assassins.
L.: -WHAT?!
Z.: -It's the most perilous poison in the area.
Syl.: -Can you help him, Zangulus?
Z.: -I can't. You can.
Syl.: -How?
Z.: -Amelia, fetch me some of these herbs from the nearby shop! - he hands her a list.
L.: -What else do you need?
Z.: -Lina, you need to get quality food. Something he loves.
Syl.: -I'll cook for him, Zangulus.
Z.: -Perfect. Zelgadis, help Sylphiel with the food. I'll help Boruro mix a special elixir.
L.: -What about me? What should I do?
Z.: -Then, you should stay here and pray that he doesn't give in until we're finished.
L.: -Oh no!
They all leave quickly, Lina stays with Gourry, who is still shaking. Lina starts weeping.
L.: -Oh Gourry! Please, forgive me. I...
G.: -Lina!
L.: -I'm here, Gourry, please don't die.
G.: -Why do you leave me too?
L.: -It's only a dream. I'm over here. - she holds his hand with both of hers.
G.: -I thought we were friends.
L.: -Of course we are, you big oaf!
G.: -I was always there for you! Don't leave me now... Please...
Zangulus comes in with a carafe full of wine and hands it to Lina.
Z.: -Make him drink it.
L.: -More wine?!
Z.: -It will end the spasms and ease his pain for a while.
In the inn kitchen, Sylphiel is trying to cook something for Gourry. Her hands are shaking with worry. She's trying to chop up some carrots, but she keeps dropping the knife. Zelgadis holds her hand to help her cut it up.
Zel.: -Easy. Try to calm down, Sylphiel. Gourry is going to be all right. There, all done.
Syl.: -Oh, Zelgadis...you didn't say quite the same to Lina...
Zel.: -You heard me shouting, didn't you?
Syl.: -And you said that... that... - she begins crying - my Gourry might not live through the night...
Zel.: -I...I...
Syl.: -But why did you tell me he would?! You knew it all along that he's a lot worse than we thought!
Zel.: -If there is hope for me, than there must also be hope for Gourry as well. And there is infinite hope in your eyes for him. In mine, you will see anguish rather than hope even for myself.
Syl.: -So you lied to make me feel better?
Zel.: -What else could I have done?
Zel.: -Stop crying or it'll be too salty even for Gourry.
Sylphiel doesn't find this little joke amusing at all. They continue preparing the food. Sylphiel, although still shocked, can now manage to cook. She can't help noticing that Zelgadis' hands move quicker with the knife than the eye can follow. When they are finally finished, they bring up the plates to Gourry's room. Zangulus arrives with the elixir with Amelia by her side.
Z.: -We don't have much time left. I've mixed the elixir with the herbs Amelia bought. When he drinks some, he will regain his consciousness for a short period of time. During that time, he must eat as much as he can, or perhaps a little bit more.
He makes Gourry drink and he slowly comes around.
G.: -What happened? Where am I?
L.: -Hi Gourry!
Gourry looks at her, shrieks, and falls unconscious again.
Zel.: -Well I'll be...
Syl.: -He got so terrified of you that he passed out.
L.: -But I...
Zel.: -Lina, I think we should leave for now.
L.: -But I...
Zel.: -Lina! Come...
Z.: -You too, Amelia.
A.: -Why?
Z.: -The second time he comes around would be a view far too horrible for someone at your age.
Zel.: -Come on...
Only Sylphiel and Zangulus remain. They give him another sip from the jug. He comes round, shrieking with pain, holding his throat with both hands. He finally begins to settle down.
Syl.: -It's okay, Gourry dear. Calm down.
G.: -Ah... Phew...Sylphiel? Zangulus? What happened?
Z.: -You've got a serious poisoning from the wine you drank. I mixed an elixir that will help you keep awake for some time.
G.: -Where are the others?
Z.: -They're outside, waiting. No time for chat Gourry, you must eat.
G.: -I couldn't eat a bite...
Syl.: -Oh, come on, Gourry dear. I've made all your favourites.
G.: -You cooked for me?
Syl.: -With a little help from Zelgadis, but yes, I did.
G.: -You should have told me before! Let me have it!
Gourry eats like a horse. Sylphiel and Zangulus are amazed at the speed he's eating. He eats everything in a few minutes' time. When he's finished, he burps and falls asleep.
Z.: -Well that was easy. I didn't think he would be so co-operative. It would have been a lot more difficult if it hadn't been for your cooking.
Syl.: -Oh, you're just saying that.
Z.: -No. Think about it. He only ate because you cooked for him. If he hadn't eaten, he would have surely died.
Syl.: -He does like my cooking, you know.
Zangulus stands up and goes for the door.
Z.: -He'll be all right from now on. He will regain his senses in a day or so.
Syl.: -Zangulus, you're a true friend of Gourry and me. A better friend of his than Lina, that's for sure.
Z.: -Don't say that. She likes Gourry.
Syl.: -Oh. Does she? - she has a bit jealous tone in her voice.
Z.: -So much that she wouldn't admit it to herself. She simply can't clearly express her emotions towards those she likes and sometimes falls overboard, that's all.
Syl.: -Zangulus!
Z.: -Yes?
Syl.: -You have my eternal gratitude for helping us.
Z.: -Hmm. Consider it as an act of good will. And as an apology for cutting you with my blade back then. I'm happy to see that there is no scar on your face. It would be a shame.
In the corridor, Amelia is walking up and down, Zelgadis is propping against the wall.
A.: -How is he, Mr Zangulus?
Z.: -He'll be fine. It went rather smoothly, as a matter of fact. He'll need lots of rest though. Where's Lina?
Zel.: -Downstairs.
Z.: -She's eating at this hour?
A.: -No, Miss Lina said she wasn't hungry.
Zel.: -That doesn't mean any good for Lina. She's always fights, eats, has a quarrel with someone or bullies Gourry around. She's been very quiet since Gourry fainted from her sight. I'm getting worried.
A.: -Someone should really see her.
Z.: -I'll have a look at what she's doing.
He goes down the stairs, and notices Lina at the bar counter, drinking. She can hardly stay on the barstool.
L.: -Bartender! Fill my glass again! And hurry it up this time!
Z.: -Not you too!
L.: -Hi (hicc) Zan! Nice to s...see you!
Z.: -You really shouldn't be drinking so much on an empty stomach.
L.: -You're not (hicc) saying that I'm d...drunk, hmm?
Z.: -I am.
L.: -Nonsense! I just need some spirits.
Z.: -Getting drunk does not help either you or Gourry.
Lina collapses on the counter and begins to cry.
Z.: -Did I say something?
L.: -Oh, Zangulus! Everybody hates me! I'm so ridiculous!
Z.: -Oh, that is not true.
Lina falls into his hands.
L.: -I'm so sorry! I didn't want to hurt him, Zangulus! - she holds him so strong it almost hurts.
Z.: -I know, I know.
L.: -Now Gourry might die because of me!
Z.: -He's already better. In fact, he'll be on his feet by tomorrow.
L.: -Huh?
Z.: -He stuffed himself pretty well with the food Sylphiel made for him.
L.: -I must see him!
Z.: -He's sleeping. He needs rest.
L.: -I must!
She runs upstairs so quickly that Zangulus doesn't realise she's not in his arms any longer. In fact, the good news surprises her so much even her head clears out. She's going for Gourry's door.
A.: -Miss Lina?
L.: -I want to see Gourry!
Zelgadis and Amelia look at each other and nod.
Zel.: -All right, but be more quiet or you might wake him up!
L.: -Will do!
She enters the room real silently. She whispers so that Gourry wouldn't wake up.
L.: -Hi.
Syl.: -Miss Lina.
L.: -How is he?
Syl.: -He no longer has a fever.
L.: -Thank god.
Syl.: -Miss Lina?
L.: -Yes, Sylphiel?
Syl.: -Can I ask you a favour?
L.: -Sure. Anything.
Syl.: -Please, don't hurt my dearest Gourry ever again.
L.: -I really didn't want to.
Syl.: -I don't mean this case only. I'm talking in general.
L.: -I suppose I could be more gentle.
Syl.: -If you are in love with him, you should state your emotions kindly, not by picking on him.
L.: -I've already told you back in Rezo's lab that I don't love him.
Syl.: -Of course! You only love his sword! Well, take it and leave him alone!
L.: -I couldn't. Not now. He couldn't take it. He wouldn't speak with me again if I did while he is in such state.
Dawn is to break. Sylphiel stands up.
Syl.: -I must cook more food for Gourry. He'll come around shortly. Stay with him. I'll send in Amelia as well.
Outside, she turns to Zelgadis.
Syl.: -Will you help me cook once again, Zelgadis?
Zel.: -You only need to ask.
Syl.: -Amelia, look after Gourry while we're away.
A.: -Sure.
Zelgadis and Sylphiel enter the kitchen. Sylphiel is nowhere near as nervous as she was the last time. She notices again how fast Zelgadis chops up the ingredients.
Syl.: -You know Zelgadis, you could become an awesome cook.
Zel.: -I'm not so sure.
Syl.: -Someone who has such a talent with knives has a head start ahead of others.
Zel.: -I'm so daring in the kitchen only because I needn't worry about cutting off my fingers or cooking myself.
Syl.: -I see. You know you are the best little helper I've ever had.
Zel.: -Spare my blushes.
Syl.: -No, I mean it. Every cook could use someone like you around. You're precise, respectful and hard working.
Zel.: -Except when I go berserk.
Syl.: -You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. It's not your fault. I remember I've told you that I can teach you how to suppress the beast.
Zel.: -We don't have time for that right now.
Syl.: -It's easy really. You only need to channel your mind so that you can eliminate all malevolent thoughts. Think of good memories, things you like, someone you love!
Zel.: -You could teach this method to Lina. Think about it! She imagines that she has the sword of light, she calms down and won't push Gourry around.
Syl.: -(Giggling) You've got a point.
Back upstairs, Gourry wakes up.
A.: -How are you, Mr Gourry?
G.: -I've had better days.
L.: -Hi Gourry!
G.: -LI...LI...
L.: -Don't black out!
G.: -Sorry, I don't know why, you seemed so terrifying...
L.: -You were having a bad dream, that's all. - she rubs a tear out from her eye.
G.: -After you almost put me six feet under.
L.: -Amelia, would you mind...
A.: -Oh, sorry.
Amelia leaves, but outside, she's trying to eavesdrop their conversation.
G.: -I had a dream that I was in a huge, dark room with one door. You were going outside one by one, waving goodbye. You were closing the door when I suddenly woke up.
L.: -Than it seems we were just in time. Gourry, look. I am really sorry about what I did. Can you please forgive me?
G.: -Only in one condition...
L.: -Tell me!
G.: -Forgive me that I babbled out your little secret to Zelgadis.
L.: -YOU WERE SOBER ALL THAT TIME?!
G.: -Well not sober, I was drunk all right, but I can somehow recall everything I said. I even remember the taste of that wine.
L.: -Well then I have a condition myself.
Gourry grabs his sword and hides it under the bedspread.
L.: -No, not your sword. Not this time. Can you also pardon me for pushing you around all this time?
G.: -You've been drinking, right?
L.: -I...I...
Lina gives it a thought to hit him, but takes a deep breath instead.
L.: -I sure have!
She hugs Gourry, weeping with joy.
L.: -Are you sure you're not mad at me?
G.: -How could I stay mad at you, Buttercup?
L.: -Gourry, if you ever dare call me like that again, I'll... - still laughing from delight.
G.: -I know, I know...
L.: -You do?
G.: -You'll slap me in the face, kick me in the shin, boot me in the balls and ...
L.: -Oh shut up, you! - hugs him even stronger.
Sylphiel and Zelgadis arrive with the food. Lina quickly lets go of Gourry.
Syl.: -Oh! You're awake, Gourry dear!
Zel.: -Good to see you're better.
A.: -Oh, Gourry can handle anything. He's as tough as stones.
She steals a look at Zelgadis, who didn't seem to hear. What a relief!
L.: -He sure is.
Syl.: -You should start eating your breakfast before it gets cold.
Gourry of course, starts eating. Lina notices, however, that Zelgadis is standing by the window. As though he was staring outside, but his eyes are closed.
L.: -What is troubling you, Zel?
Zel.: -I'm at it again. - he opens his eyes to reveal that they're red again.
L.: -Uh, Sylphiel, don't mean to trouble you, but...
Syl.: -Yes? Oh, Zelgadis, not again!
Zel.: -It's back. I can feel it. I can hear it.
Syl.: -This isn't right. It would normally take a week or so for the beast to emerge again.
L.: -Can you help him?
Syl.: -I could, but he should learn how to suppress it himself. Do as I've told you in the kitchen.
Zel.: -Good memories? Like I had any...
Syl.: -You must try, Zelgadis.
Zelgadis is racking his brains. What should he think about? The story Gourry told him about Lina? No, no. That's not funny anymore. Or should he think about helping Sylphiel in the kitchen? That sounds better, but it's still not enough. But wait... Zelgadis begins cackling to himself. He opens his eyes, and they're as clear as they can be.
L.: -Thank god. You OK?
Zel.: -Never felt better.
Syl.: -You see? It isn't so hard, is it?
Zel.: -You were right.
L.: -Tell me what you thought about, Zel!
Zel.: -No, I couldn't.
L.: -Oh, come on! It isn't what Gourry told you, is it?
Zel.: -No, no. You should really know better that I don't find it amusing any more. We've discussed that already.
L.: -Than what?
Zel.: -Won't it ruin my ability to use this memory again?
Syl.: -Of course it won't. But you should make up something else as well, because it might not last.
Zel.: -Okay than. I remembered how Gourry put you on the nail.
L.: -WHAT?!
Zel.: -It was just so hilarious. You were trying to break free and he literally hung you on that nail in the wall by your cloak, and then smacked his lips towards you. You couldn't get off and you began wriggling and shrieking with your feet way above the ground. You should've seen yourself.
G.: -I did THAT?
L.: -Yes you did.
G.: -It seems I was even more drunk than I thought.
L.: -YOU SAID YOU COULD REMEMBER EVERYTHING!
G.: -It seems that this one escaped me.
L.: -Good old Gourry.
Gourry finishes his breakfast and jumps out from bed.
G.: -That felt sooo good. Well, let's go; long way to go yet!
L.: -Slow down, we haven't had anything ourselves. Why don't you go take a walk?
G.: -Splendid idea!
He straps on his armour and runs out from the inn. The others can see him from the window already!
Zel.: -Wow! He's fast!
L.: -Lets have breakfast, shall we?
They go downstairs and order their food. Lina of course, eats more than all the others together.
Zel.: -I still don't understand how you can eat so much.
L.: -None of your business.
Zangulus comes in, says hello and sits at the counter. Lina quickly finishes her share of the food and sits next to him.
L.: -Hi Zan!
Z.: -Oh, hi. You look much better already.
L.: -You mean all that? - she points at the dozens of empty plates and bowls.
Z.: -I...uh...I meant that you're not drunk.
L.: -Oh.
Z.: -I've met Gourry on my way here. He thanked me for helping, asked if there was a smith nearby and ran off.
L.: -It's good to see he's so energetic.
Zel.: -We're finished; it is time that we left.
Z.: -I'll see you till the town borders.
B.: -Oh, before you leave, here are your weapons. Can I ask you all a favour?
L.: -Anything, Boruro.
B.: -Will you sign the register for me?
L.: -Sure.
He hands a dusty old book, a quill and some ink to them.
Zel.: -It's full of Zangulus' name, but I don't see any other names except for Gourry's.
B.: -Only Mr Zangulus leaves with a clear head, that's why he can sign it all the time. You are the only ones who are sober apart from him in years!
They all sign the book.
Zel.: -Lets go!
They leave the inn and meet Gourry outside. He looks somewhat different.
L.: -Gourry, where have you been?
G.: -Don't you see anything different?
L.: -Oh yeah, your armour! It does look a bit different.
G.: -I've been to that mage smith and had a few extra pads put in here and there. And I also bought this little pendant that flashes when I've had enough alcohol for one day. Oh, by the way, the old man asked me to give you this, Zangulus.
Gourry hands him a box. Zangulus opens it. It contains a sword and a note. Zangulus draws the sword. It looks like an ordinary sword.
L.: -It doesn't look any special.
Z.: -I've special ordered it so that it would have the same mechanism as Gourry's sword.
Zangulus ejects the blade, reads the note and shouts:
Z.: -SCORCHING FLAMES OF INFERNO: INFLAME!
A blade of flame appears. The gang is amazed at the sight.
Zel.: -A Flame sword!
Z.: -The old man said that the Howling sword was a good base to work on.
L.: -It's magnificent!
Z.: -The note also says it is indestructible, just like the sword of Light, and it can cast fireballs, which become more and more powerful as I master the sword.
A.: -I don't believe my eyes!
They stare at the sight until Zangulus puts the sword away.
L.: -You go ahead, I'll be right with you.
Lina stays with Zangulus.
L.: -Thank you for saving Gourry, Zan. He wouldn't have survived if it hadn't been for you.
Z.: -Don't mention it.
L.: -How can I ever repay you?
Z.: -It really isn't necessary.
L.: -Wait, I've got it...
She searches her pockets and hands him a book.
L.: -Here. It contains the most essential fire spells. It might help you master your new sword.
Z.: -I really can't accept it.
L.: -I insist. - Zangulus takes the small tome.
Z.: -Thanks.
L.: -Don't mention it. - she winks at him again.
Z.: -You know we should really stop this.
L.: -Why should we?
Z.: -I don't know.
Suddenly, Lina stretches herself and gives a small kiss on Zangulus' cheek. He's so surprised he can't say a word.
L.: -Bye!
Zangulus just waves at her, holding his cheek with his other hand. Lina catches up with the others.
Zel.: -He's still standing there! What did you do to him?
L.: -None of your business.
G.: -Ooh...
L.: -Shut up!
G.: -I didn't say anything!
L.: -You were thinking about it!
G.: -What was I thinking about? Hmm?
L.: -Oh, sorry, did I say: "think"? Oh, forgive me, Gourry!
G.: -Why are you so edgy? Ooh, I get it!
L.: -Forget it if you know what's good for you!
A.: -Forget what, Miss Lina?
G.: -Let me sing it in a song, Amelia.
A.: -You would sing it, Mr Gourry?
G.: -You only need to ask.
Zel.: -Gourry, watch it...
G.: -How about it, Sylphiel?
Syl.:-OH, please, Gourry dear, do sing something!
L.: -GOURRY!
G.: -Here goes. (Clears his throat) "Zangulus and Lina, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G..."
L.: -THAT'S IT!
Zel.: -You did it again!
Gourry cackles. Lina runs to him and kicks him in the same spot she did the last time. The others turn away, even close their eyes. All they can hear is a scream of pain.
Syl.: -You promised you wouldn't hurt him again, Miss Lina!
L.: -Ooh, my foot!
Zel.: -What the...
They all turn back; Gourry is still standing, Lina is lying on the ground, moaning.
A.: -What did you do to her, Gourry?!
G.: -I didn't do anything. She only kicked me.
A.: -But how...
G.: -I thought I told you I bought a few extra pads. Now I am Lina-proof.
Zel.: -You mean, that you put a few pads...
G.: -Yup.
L.: -YOU SHIFTY LOUSE, YOU...
Syl.: -Can you stand up, Miss Lina?
L.: -I don't know. It hurts!
G.: -Than it seems I'll have to carry you to the next town.
L.: -OH NO YOU WON'T!
A.: -You don't have a choice, Miss Lina. Boruro told us that the enchanted soil saps all white magic energies. We can't heal your foot.
L.: -WHAT?!
G.: -I'll just pick you up, now.
L.: -DON'T YOU DARE CARRY ME!
Too late, Gourry lifts and puts her on his shoulder so that she couldn't hit him.
Zel.: -Gourry, where did you have that kind of money to buy such expensive protective pads?
G.: -I found a whole purse of huge diamonds back in Rezo's lab. They were worth a fortune!
L.: -Why didn't you tell me?!
G.: -So that you would keep it all for yourself? Forget it! I found it.
L.: -But I handle money around here!
G.: -Better luck next time!
Zel.: -Sometimes I'm glad I don't have to wear any armour.
Syl.: -Why, Zelgadis? It would look real nice on you.
A.: -Yeah, Zelgadis! A grey set of armour!
Zelgadis blushes to the roots of his hair.
Zel.: -Why grey, Amelia?
A.: -Like in Greywords.
He puts a hand on her shoulder and smiles.
Zel.: -I'll think about it.
"We've left the town of the many wines,
And fortunately saved Gourry's life.
